One person dead after Claremont house fire

The victims identity is being withheld pending autopsy, which is scheduled for Friday.

One person has died following a fire that engulfed a mobile home in Claremont, New Hampshire, early Thursday morning. Emergency responders received multiple emergency calls around 4:30 a.m. reporting flames at a house located on Stewart Avenue. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered the home fully ablaze and learned that the sole occupant was unaccounted for.

Witnesses described the intensity of the fire, with flames reportedly reaching above the trees bordering the property. One neighbor, who viewed the incident unfold, noted the extraordinary brightness of the fire, reminiscent of a sunrise, as it rapidly approached his own residence.

Firefighters faced significant challenges in battling the blaze. Initial efforts involved attempting an interior attack and searching for potential victims, but the firefighters were compelled to switch to defensive tactics due to the compromised structure of the home, which eventually collapsed. Fire Chief James Chamberlain praised the response of the first crews on site for their effective initial actions.

After the fire was brought under control, responders discovered the body of a woman inside the residence. Her identity is being withheld pending the completion of an autopsy, which is scheduled for Friday. The New Hampshire State Fire Marshal's Office is actively investigating the cause of the fire; however, authorities currently do not suspect foul play.
