Future of Project Graduation in Keene Hangs in the Balance

Without 12 new volunteers to replace the current board, there is a possibility that Project Grad may be dissolved after 2027.

The survival of Project Graduation in Keene is uncertain this year due to a significant volunteer shortage. This initiative, which has been hosting a drug-free celebration for seniors at Keene High School for nearly 40 years, is encountering its most challenging recruitment period yet, as stated by Co-Director Kathleen Joyal. Without 12 new volunteers to replace the current board, there is a possibility that the organization may be dissolved following the 2027 event, a decision that could be made as early as October.

Project Graduation, which originated in the 1980s across the nation, focuses on providing a safe environment for graduating students to celebrate. This year’s festivities are scheduled for June 12, directly after graduation, and will feature a variety of activities such as inflatable games, yard games, and a chance auction where participants can win prizes using fake money.

Joyal highlighted that the current board members, including herself, are feeling overwhelmed and fatigued, with many not having children in the school system anymore. They are concerned that discontinuing Project Graduation could lead to increased risks for students in terms of substance use and impaired driving. The initiative was conceived to protect students and ensure they enjoy their celebrations responsibly.

If the organization cannot recruit enough volunteers, it faces the possibility of dissolving, which would mean transferring its remaining assets, including funds and supplies, to the local school district. The existing board has committed to remain in their positions through the 2026-27 school year to assist with the transition to new leadership.

Roles on the board include positions such as a supervisor, secretary, treasurer, and volunteer coordinator, along with other members needed for coordinating event logistics. Although there have been financial challenges in the past, this year has seen more success, with a $15,000 contribution from the school board and over $10,000 raised through the “Dancing with the Keene Stars” fundraiser.

The organization is also appealing for volunteers to help with the graduation night celebrations. An online volunteer form will be available soon, and an informational gathering for prospective volunteers is scheduled for May 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Cheshire Career Center. Interested individuals can reach Project Graduation through their Facebook page, visit keeneprojgrad.org, or send an email.

The urgency of the situation is clear as those involved hope for a turnaround in volunteer recruitment to keep this cherished program alive.
