This past weekend, the state championship for the FIRST Lego League took place at GlobalFoundries, featuring more than 100 teams from schools across Vermont. The event focuses on engaging students in grades four through eight in areas such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through hands-on activities.
Teams are tasked with constructing Lego robots designed to perform specific actions that earn them points. Additionally, participants have the opportunity to present their projects to a panel of judges, which adds another layer to the competition.
GlobalFoundries’ senior director highlighted the significant benefits the program offers, noting the development of essential skills for participating students.
A seventh-grade participant from Norwich mentioned the rewarding aspects of teamwork, emphasizing the enjoyment of collaborating with friends on projects involving coding and building with Legos.
Organizers of the event expressed their ambition to broaden the reach of the program, aiming to include all schools in Vermont in the future.
