The Swanzey selectboard will welcome two additional members, growing from three to five, following the election on Tuesday. This change comes after local residents endorsed a warrant article aimed at altering the board’s size during last year’s voting.
Bill Hutwelker, the board’s current chairman, is the only member facing reelection this year. His term, along with that of his fellow member James Tempesta, who will end in the following year, is on the line, while Mark LaBelle’s tenure continues until 2028. The ballot features Hutwelker along with Bruce Tatro, James Ward, and Michael York, with the two candidates securing the most votes receiving three-year terms on the board.
A different election for a one-year term on the selectboard includes candidates Alan Gross and Elizabeth Traynor. In a distinct race, Sly Karasinski and Daniel LeClair are competing for a two-year term as moderator.
In addition to the selectboard positions, voters will also consider a warrant article that seeks to authorize $1.2 million in bonds for the construction of a new public works building, necessitating approval from a three-fifths majority.
The proposed operating budget on the town warrant stands at $8.9 million, which resembles the budget allocated for the previous year. Voters will also assess the potential expansion of the elderly property tax exemption and an enhancement in the property tax credit for individuals with a total disability connected to military service.
For residents aged 65 to 74, the exemption would rise to $50,000 from the previous $25,000. Those in the 75 to 79 age group would see their exemption increase to $75,000, up from $35,000, while individuals over 80 would benefit from a $100,000 exemption instead of the current $40,000. These exemptions are subject to specific asset and income qualifications.
Additionally, the property tax credit for those with a military-service-connected total disability is proposed to increase to $4,500, expanding from the existing $4,000.
