Concerns are emerging regarding the safety of soft gel toys, often marketed for their calming effects. These toys, favored by many children, have been linked to skin injuries, prompting parents to report cases of irritation such as redness and peeling.
Investigative research has surfaced from Consumer Reports, revealing that several children experienced severe skin reactions after encountering burst squishy toys. Lauran Kirchner, an investigative reporter, expressed alarm at the incidents of severe skin damage, prompting a deeper investigation into the contents of these toys.
While certain brands disclose their ingredients, many do not have a legal obligation to provide this information. Researchers from Consumer Reports conducted tests on eight popular squishy toys. Their findings revealed that while seven toys had neutral pH levels, one toy, the Nee-Doh Groovy Glob, displayed a pH level of 2, which is as acidic as common household substances like lemon juice or vinegar. Safety experts indicated that such acidity levels could lead to chemical burns, particularly concerning when it comes to children’s sensitive skin.
In response to these findings, Schylling, the producer of Nee-Doh, contested the results of the tests, asserting that the gel is crafted from polyvinyl alcohol, a substance deemed safe for skin contact. The company also noted that it has communicated with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, stating that only four incidents have been reported out of over 100 million Nee-Doh products sold.
Additionally, safety warnings extend to social media practices that suggest microwaving squishy toys to enhance their softness. Tests revealed that these toys could explode after as little as 15 seconds in a microwave, resulting in temperatures exceeding 200 degrees, which pose a risk of burns.
Experts advise that while these gel toys can provide enjoyment, adhering to safety guidelines is vital. It is recommended that children should never microwave or freeze these toys, avoid leaving them in hot vehicles, and keep them away from infants and toddlers. Should a toy burst on a child’s skin, immediate washing of the affected area and disposal of the toy are recommended steps.
