Brattleboro police say a man is facing multiple charges after allegedly attacking a firefighter during a medical call Wednesday night at a Putney Road motel.

According to the Brattleboro Police Department, officers responded with the Brattleboro Fire Department to the Covered Bridge Inn at about 8:28 p.m. on Jan. 29 for what police described as an undisclosed medical emergency. While emergency crews were providing treatment, police say Jacob Matyas put his hands around a firefighter’s neck and attempted to strangle them.

A Brattleboro police officer at the scene intervened and “immediately subdued” Matyas, police said. Additional officers arrived, and Matyas was taken into custody.

Police said Matyas was charged with aggravated assault, assault on a protected professional, disorderly conduct, and violating court-ordered conditions of release. He was initially held in lieu of $10,000 bail and was scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 30 in Windham County Superior Court.

Anyone arrested or cited by the Brattleboro Police Department is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

If you have information about a crime, Brattleboro police encourage the public to report it.
