The investigation led by Vermont Attorney General Charity Clark confirmed that Ludlow Police Chief Jeffrey Warfle acted within his rights during a shooting on January 1. This conclusion was published in an official announcement following an inquiry related to an encounter with 18-year-old Jaime Gomez, who reportedly threatened Warfle with a knife at the Fox Run Inn.

On that New Year’s Day, authorities were alerted to a noise complaint at the inn shortly after 6 a.m. Warfle responded to the scene, where he found Gomez behaving erratically and damaging property. The chief informed Gomez about the complaint, to which Gomez allegedly reacted with confusion about what he had reportedly been shouting.

Video evidence from the incident showed that Warfle suggested Gomez seemed to be experiencing a crisis, but Gomez denied any such issue. During the encounter, as Warfle attempted to speak with the individual who made the complaint, Gomez followed him upstairs. Despite Warfle’s requests for Gomez to keep his hands out of his pockets and to stop advancing, Gomez allegedly attempted to strike the officer with a knife concealed in his jacket. In response, Warfle discharged his weapon, injuring Gomez.

After the shooting, Gomez was taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center for treatment and later released. He faces charges, including attempted second-degree murder, to which he has pleaded not guilty. A judge determined he would remain incarcerated without bail at the Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield.

In addition to the Attorney General’s findings, Caledonia County State’s Attorney Claire Burns, acting on behalf of Windsor County’s prosecutor, evaluated the situation independently and came to the same conclusion regarding the legality of Warfle’s actions.

Gomez, in subsequent statements to investigators while receiving medical treatment, indicated he was experiencing auditory hallucinations and felt a sense of fear regarding those nearby.

This incident emphasizes the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement and the complexities surrounding mental health crises.
