An esteemed geologist and trail advocate from Vermont tragically lost his life in a head-on collision in Florida on Wednesday morning. Arthur Gilbert, aged 96 and a resident of Dorset, was involved in the incident on Interstate 75 when a driver traveling in the wrong direction collided with his vehicle.

The driver, 24-year-old Genise Taylor, was reportedly traveling northbound in the southbound lanes before impact. This unfortunate event resulted in the death of Gilbert, who had recently dropped off his wife, Pamela, at the airport for their usual winter stay in Florida.

Gilbert was not only a prominent figure within the geological field but was also deeply respected for his contributions to the community in Dorset. His efforts in preserving local hiking trails were particularly noteworthy, and a lookout point is named in honor of his family, alongside a bench commemorating his dedication to trail advocacy.

His impact on the community was highlighted by Jon Matthewson from the Dorset Historical Society, who noted Gilbert’s role in leading hikes for over a decade, sharing geological insights along with the region’s rich history. Matthewson expressed that Gilbert’s passion and extensive knowledge will remain a cherished memory for many.

In remembrance of her husband, Pamela Gilbert expressed a desire for him to be cherished for his significant contributions rather than the circumstances of his tragic passing. She emphasized the profound respect he earned across various sectors and from everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

Authorities revealed that the driver responsible for the crash was under the influence, with her blood alcohol level reported to be nearly triple the legal limit. Taylor has been charged with DUI manslaughter.
