Monadnock Peer Support, located in Keene and dedicated to offering free peer-led mental health assistance and community engagement, has announced the selection of a new acting executive director. Melissa Callender, who joined the organization as the director of mission impact in 2021, officially took on her new role on March 16, according to a statement by MPS Board Chair John Letendre.

Letendre expressed confidence in Callender’s abilities, noting that her skill set would positively influence the organization’s future and that both staff and participants showed their support during the selection process.

Following the December 2024 hiring of Stephen Tavella, the role was briefly filled by Eli Rivera after Tavella’s departure in May. Rivera, who also serves as Sheriff of Cheshire County, conveyed his satisfaction with the appointment of Callender. He acknowledged her dedication and growth during her time in the interim position, highlighting her vision and the backing she has from her team.

Rivera is expected to assist Callender during her transition into this position. In her own statement, Callender expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to lead and reaffirm her commitment to the mission of Monadnock Peer Support. She emphasized the transformative power of peer support in mental health recovery and looked forward to collaborating with staff, volunteers, and community stakeholders to enhance access to vital resources.

This leadership change comes in light of recent controversies, as the former executive director, Christine Allen, recently pleaded guilty to charges of embezzlement in U.S. District Court in Concord. Allen is accused of misappropriating approximately $200,000 from the nonprofit during her tenure from 2021 to 2023.
