Federal officials have confirmed that a man apprehended during a standoff in South Burlington on Wednesday was not the individual originally sought by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
The operation occurred at a residence on Dorset Street, which was the center of protests as authorities attempted to secure a warrant. Despite the intensive efforts from ICE, the person they were targeting, Deyvi Daniel Corona-Sanchez, 24, was not present. He is a Mexican citizen who had recently lived in South Burlington and was facing charges for his illegal re-entry into the U.S. following a past deportation.
Approximately 150 demonstrators gathered outside while the standoff unfolded. ICE agents, acting on a federal warrant issued on the same day, executed a search of the home but found that Corona-Sanchez was not there. A release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office noted that while other residents were identified, the original suspect remained unlocated, but his arrest warrant remains valid.
Authorities disclosed that Corona-Sanchez had been previously deported from the U.S. in 2022 after he was found crossing the Rio Grande River. Additionally, he faced a pending charge of driving under the influence from a January arrest by the Middlebury Police Department.
The ICE operation began around 7:40 a.m. when agents attempted to arrest a different individual, who then fled the scene in a vehicle, crashing into parked cars and ultimately fleeing on foot to the house on Dorset Street. Authorities initially believed the fleeing suspect to be Corona-Sanchez, prompting the warrant.
Updates on this incident will follow as new information becomes available.
