Budget Approved, Land Purchase Rejected in Charlestown Election

During the town’s annual election, community members successfully endorsed an operating budget of $6.98 million for general municipal activities, an increase of 4.7 percent compared to the 2025 budget of $6.67 million. The budget received a vote count of 456 in favor to 396 against.

In a contrasting decision, voters opted against a proposed $250,000 expenditure aimed at enhancing equipment and supplies for a transport ambulance service managed by the Charlestown Fire Department, with the proposal being dismissed by a significant 559 votes to 313.

The election occurred following the resignation of Charlestown Fire Chief Jerry Beaudry, as indicated in selectboard meeting minutes from February. Beaudry outlined concerns regarding the local ambulance provider, Golden Cross Ambulance, along with complaints of insufficient support from town leaders. He also mentioned that the fire department’s three captains intended to resign by the end of March.

On March 5, the town clarified that it had resolved the recent issues with Golden Cross and would continue its contract with the service.

Moreover, the electorate decisively rejected a plan that sought to allocate $269,000 for purchasing land designated for a new fire station that would replace the existing facility on Main Street. The final tally was 641 votes against the proposal compared to 232 in favor.

In another close call during the election, residents turned down an article for $64,000 to fund a reappraisal of the town’s real estate by a narrow margin of 436 to 419. According to state regulations, such reappraisals must occur every five years.
