Springfield Residents to Vote on Hartness Park Gun Discharge Ban

On Town Meeting Day, residents will cast their votes on whether to implement a ban on gun firing within Hartness Park. This issue previously arose in 2024 when voters rejected a similar proposal, doing so by a margin of approximately 100 votes.

Until August 2024, hunting was permitted in the 85-acre park, but a new ordinance introduced by the select board added the park to the residential firearms restriction, which bars discharging firearms within 500 feet of any structure. Shortly after, voters decided to rescind that regulation. Now, more than a year later, a group of petitioners has successfully collected enough signatures to put the proposed prohibition back on the ballot.

Larry Hennessey, a local resident and veteran hunter living near the park, expressed his support for the proposed ban, noting that the area has seen increased population growth. He believes restricting hunting in the park could be a prudent decision.

Another resident, Jason Klimaseski, although new to Springfield and not a hunter himself, supports the interests of those who engage in hunting as long as it is conducted responsibly. He emphasized the importance of safety in these activities to maintain community safety.

Community members will have the opportunity to discuss the ballot articles, including the proposed ban, at an informational session scheduled for Monday evening at the local high school. Voting will occur on Tuesday at the middle school throughout the day.
