Emergency responders in Chesterfield, New Hampshire, actively searched for two snowmobilers from Florida who went missing in Pisgah State Park on Saturday as frigid temperatures set in. The call for assistance was received at 6:36 p.m. from NH State Police Dispatch, prompting an immediate response.
A New Hampshire Fish and Game conservation officer established contact with the individuals, who were reported to be struggling with cold temperatures and depleting fuel and phone battery. The temperature at the time was around 2 degrees, with significant wind chills making conditions even more severe. The snowmobilers, identified as Carlos Garcia-Cardona, 37, and Cameron Cattery, 27, both from Clearwater, were not injured but were understandably cold.
Rescuers noted that the riders, while using their phones for navigation, were likely affected by the cold which drained their batteries. As their machines ran low on fuel, the risk of becoming truly stranded increased, creating a dangerous scenario if help had not arrived in time. The conservation officer successfully located them around 7:30 p.m. and guided them back to a trailhead, where they received transportation assistance from the Chesterfield Police Department.
Authorities emphasized the importance of preparedness for snowmobilers, especially in extreme weather conditions. Recommendations included dressing appropriately for the cold, being fully aware of fuel levels, and having alternative navigation tools, like a paper map, in addition to relying on smartphones.
In light of this incident, New Hampshire Fish and Game urges all outdoor enthusiasts to heed safety advice and remain vigilant of potential hazards while enjoying winter activities.
