Vermont’s Governor Phil Scott has added his voice to the increasing number of lawmakers expressing concern regarding the recent death of a protester in Minneapolis, which was the second tragic incident involving law enforcement. Thirty-seven-year-old Alex Pretti was shot multiple times by Border Patrol agents during the incident on Saturday.

Governor Scott criticized the federal authorities, emphasizing that the loss of American lives while exercising their constitutional right to protest is unacceptable. He remarked on the failures present in the federal immigration operations, suggesting a lack of proper coordination regarding public safety and law enforcement methods. Scott urged for a pause in these operations by the President to reassess the government’s priorities, particularly directing attention towards genuine criminal activities instead of targeting citizens protesting against the government.

Reactions from Congressional members in the area have also emerged, with Senator Bernie Sanders pushing for the immediate withdrawal of all federal agents from Minneapolis and other urban centers. He expressed his disgust over the incident, labeling it as another senseless murder associated with ICE, which he described as operating akin to a paramilitary entity harming communities.

Senator Peter Welch echoed those sentiments, demanding accountability from the Trump Administration and criticizing the undue force being employed. He asserted the necessity for reform and an end to unchecked authority for federal agencies.

New Hampshire Senator Maggie Hassan characterized ICE’s recent actions as beyond the pale, advocating for a collaborative approach to reforming immigration laws that prioritize both security and the removal of violent offenders. She remarked on the dangers posed to American citizens by armed federal agents, highlighting the absence of due process and the resultant escalation of tensions in communities.

Federal agencies, including the White House, have defended the actions taken by law enforcement, stating that officers acted in response to perceived threats from Pretti, whom they claimed appeared intent on attacking law enforcement.
